Chapter Nine

By the next morning, Rebecca had decided that she should take a step forward in conquering her fear of letting people in. Standing where she was didn’t seem to be an option, and she’d seen the proof of Daniel’s advice in the pleasure the family had taken in helping with the shop’s opening.

At the moment, they were cleaning up the kitchen after breakfast, and the men and younger kinder had scattered to their chores. She brought a platter to the sink, where Mary Ann was washing dishes and Leah was drying.

“I was thinking about the quilting group coming this afternoon. You did say that you’d like to help, Leah. Do you think you have time today to sit in on it? I’m not sure how experienced any of them are, other than Mamm’s friend.”

Leah’s face lit with a smile. “Ach, I was planning to get in on the group today. I’m looking forward to it. I can bring a table runner I’m working on, just so I have some reason for being a part of it.”

“Why would you need a reason? You’re working with me on the shop, remember?” It was easy to see that Leah was genuinely pleased and not just pretending in order to be helpful.

“Can’t I do something, Aunt Rebecca?” Mary Ann turned, her hands full of soapsuds. “I can help any customers who come in while you’re busy. And if the lady with the boppli is there, I could watch the little one for her.”

She glanced at Leah for her approval, and Leah nodded.

“Denke, Mary Ann. I’m pretty sure she’s coming, so that would be helpful.”

“Shannon doesn’t seem to have any close friends or family here in the valley,” Leah said. “That’s a shame. It’s not easy to manage everything, especially with a first baby.” She smiled and flicked her dish towel at her daughter. “That wasn’t you, you know. I made all my mistakes on your brother.”

“I’ll tell him so the next time he starts bossing me.” Mary Ann’s eyes twinkled, making her look very like her mother.

“You’ll never break a big brother of that,” Rebecca said. “Your daadi was my big brother, and he still thinks I need his help and advice, just because he claims he held my hand when I was learning to walk.”

Leah shook her head in mock sorrow. “Poor Sam. We’d best not tell him we were talking about him.”

Rebecca nodded, but the light words made her wonder if she’d hurt her brother’s feelings when she didn’t seem to need him. There seemed to be no end to the possible wrong steps she could take with those who loved her.

“How many women do you think will be there this afternoon?” Leah dried her hands and hung up the towel. Together they finished putting dishes back in the cabinet.

“I wish I knew. Probably at least three, but from what Mamm’s friend said, she intended to tell others about it.”

“Glenda Allen,” Leah said, supplying the name. “Glenda likes to organize things, that’s certain sure.
